Round 1
1. Mario Williams, DE NC State* Other options: RB Reggie Bush, OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, QB Vince Young
The Houston Texans find themselves with the #1 overall choice for the second time in five years, and had the first crack at landing a dynamic talent and high-profile player in USC's Reggie Bush. But as the draft nears, the Texans have pulled what will prove to be the first of many "swerves" in the chaotic draft weekend, by signing NC State Defensive End Mario Williams to a 6-year contract, clinching his services. Mario Williams resides as the #1 talent on my personal big board, and Texans GM Charlie Casserly deserves credit for making the gutsy, and ultimately better, choice here.
2. NY Jets(f. NO) - Reggie Bush, RB USC* Other options: QB Matt Leinart, QB Vince Young, OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson
The Jets off-season saw a new regime take over in the coaching staff as well as the front office, ushering in first-time Head Coach Eric Mangini(formerly of the Patriots), and first-time GM Mike Tannenbaum. With the Texans surprising many by taking Mario Williams, the Jets have the perfect oppurtunity to open their "new era" with a bang by selecting the most marketable athlete in the draft, Reggie Bush. Not only does he fill a need behind an aging Curtis Martin, but his high-profile will fit right in for the biggest sports market in the country.
3. Tennessee Titans - Matt Leinart, QB USC Other options: OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson, QB Vince Young, QB Jay Cutler
With Steve McNair nearing the end of his long tenured career as the Titans's signal-caller, Tennessee seems to be focusing heavily on adding the heir to his position. Tennessee has done a terrific job of not tipping their hand and remaining unclear as to which of the "big 3" quarterbacks they plan on adding. But in the end, with former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow as the standing OC for the Titans, and a USC alum in Jeff Fisher helming the head coaching position, Tennessee will turn to Matt Leinart. Fisher has shown no desire to "rebuild" under a new quarterback, and Leinart proves to be the most pro-ready of the "big 3." Floyd Reese will lobby for Young as an heir to McNair, but Fisher and his coaching staff will win out in the end.
4. New Orleans Saints(f. NO) - D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT Virginia Other options: OLB AJ Hawk, TE Vernon Davis, QB Vince Young
The Saints have made no secret of wanting to move out of their original #2 slot, and with Houston selecting Mario Williams over Bush, they found ample suitors. The Saints made a big off-season splash by signing QB Drew Brees of the Saints, and despite moving 2005 first rounder Jammal Brown to left tackle, they'll get their man here by selecting mountainous Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. He'll keep their new franchise QB upright and allow them to move Jammal Brown back to his more natural position of RT, providing them with bookend tackles for the next decade.
5. Green Bay Packers - AJ Hawk, OLB Ohio State Other options: TE Vernon Davis, OLB Ernie Sims, DB Michael Huff
During the 2005 draft Packers GM Ted Thompson ignored the teams pressing need for defense and jumped the gun on taking Brett Favre's heir apparent, in Aaron Rodgers. Its now or never to add some defensive help, preferrably the type of defensive help who comes along with consistency and leadership. Those two words are two of the first that come to mind when describing Ohio State linebacker AJ Hawk, the anchor of a great Ohio State defense and a guy who can make plays anywhere on the field. He'll quickly be the anchor of Green Bay's ailing D.
6. San Francisco 49ers - Vernon Davis, TE Maryland* Other options: DB Michael Huff, DT Haloti Ngata, OT Winston Justice
The once-proud 49ers have been marred by mediocrity and worse in recent years, and tried to turn that downward trend around by drafting Utah QB Alex Smith with the #1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. Viewed as a stretch by many, the experiment was a let down in year 1, where Smith produced only 1 touchdown while tossing 11 picks. But, have no fear Niners fans, Vernon is here. Ask just about any QB coach how you can add to the comfort level of a young QB, and they'll tell you two things: a cornerstone OT, or an athletic pass-catcher who can find seams and make catches in traffic. Without an elite OT on the board, the Niners will gladly opt for the ladder in Maryland TE Vernon Davis.
7. Oakland Raiders - Michael Huff, CB Texas Other options: QB Vince Young, DT Haloti Ngata, QB Jay Cutler
A dynamic talent like Vince Young will be appealing to the Raiders here, but with last year's 3rd round pick in QB Andrew Walter still on the roster, and a non-existant history of drafting QBs in the 1st round by Al Davis, they'll turn to Davis's favorite form of drafting: defensive speed. Texas DB Michael Huff has the size and hard hitting ability to play free safety, but also has the lateral quickness and coverage skills to contribute immediately as a cornerback. And on top of that, he clocked in with a 4.36 40-yard dash at the combine, which surely piqued Al Davis's interest.
8. Buffalo Bills - Brodrick Bunkley, DT Florida State Other options: OT Winston Justice, DT Haloti Ngata, OLB Ernie Sims The Bills, under new General Manager Marv Levy, will certainly take a long look at adding athleticism and upside to a lackluster offensive line here. But in the end, the once-dominant Bills defense has taken hits in free agency after alreading regressing greatly in 2005. They could apt for the space-eating 2 gap tackle in Oregon's Haloti Ngata, but in the end the best fit lays in Florida State's Brodrick Bunkley, a tenacious inside man who makes a living in the backfield.
9. Detroit Lions - Ernie Sims, OLB Florida State* Other options: DE Kamerion Wimbley, CB Jonathan Joseph, OT Winston Justice
The Detroit Lions havent selected a defensive player in the 1st round in nearly a decade, but the team remains lackluster on both sides of the ball. With additions to the QB position in Jon Kitna and Josh McCown, a talented WR corps and an up-and-coming runningback in Kevin Jones, the Lions desperately need to look defense here. And with a defensive minded Head Coach in Rod Marinelli, he'll realize that the explosive missile defender that is Ernie Sims not only fills a need but helps start the rebuilding process on the defensive side of things.
10. Arizona Cardinals - Vince Young, QB Texas* Other options: DT Haloti Ngata, QB Jay Cutler, OT Winston Justice
The Cardinals boasted the #1 passing offense in the NFL in 2005, even with an aged and oft-injured Kurt Warner at the helm. The edition of former Colts mainstay Edgerrin James adds a new dimension to what was already an explosive offense. So clearly, Arizona should want to go Defense here, right? Not so fast. Vince Young is an exceptional athlete and leader, and very miniscule defficiencies have allowed him to slide down the draft board. Cardinals coach Dennis Green knows a great playmaking QB when he sees one, so jumps on the chance to draft Young.
11. St.Louis Rams - Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt Other options: DT Haloti Ngata, CB Jonathan Joseph, OLB Chad Greenway
New Rams coach Scott Linehan brings an extensive resume of potent offenses and the ability to develop Quarterbacks. The Rams already have an above-average offense and a former Pro Bowler at QB in Marc Bulger, but there are rumors that Linehan wants to develop a QB of his own, and at #11 he'll be hard pressed to pass on the over-hyped king riser of this draft, Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler. An addition to the defensive backfield like Jonathan Joseph or a space-eater inside like Haloti Ngata might be the smarter choice, but Linehan goes with what he knows.
12. Cleveland Browns - Kamerion Wimbley, OLB Florida State Other options: OLB Manny Lawson, CB Jonathan Joseph, OLB Bobby Carpenter
Cleveland went on a rabid spending spree in the off-season, using their abdunance of salary cap space to greatly upgrade their ailing offense. In the draft, Romeo Crennel looks to add some defensive pieces who will better ease the full conversion from the 43-defense to the 34-defense. They added former Patriots OLB Willie McGinest already, and they'll take it one step further by adding his variable clone, in FSU's Kamerion Wimbley.
13. Baltimore Ravens - Haloti Ngata, DT Oregon* Other options : OT Winston Justice, CB Jonathan Joseph, DB Donte Whitner
During the Super Bowl hay-days of the Baltimore Ravens, their defense excelled because their linebackers had free-range to make plays while two massive defensive tackles--Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa--did the dirty work up front. Since the afforementioned moved on, Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens defense has never really gotten back to that form. But the Ravens are thrilled to add a massive, space-eating mauler to the DT rotation in Oregon's Haloti Ngata.
14. Philadelphia Eagles - Winston Justice, OT USC* Other options: WR Chad Jackson, DT John McCargo, OLB Chad Greenway The Eagles, like the Ravens, also failed to live up to expectations due to a severe run of crippling injuries, and the lockerroom drama known as Terrell Owens. The Eagles might look to find Owens's replacement in speedy Florida WR Chad Jackson, or to add another disruptive interior defender to the defensive line rotation in NC State's John McCargo. Knowing the team's history of building from the trenches and covetting linemen, they won't be able to pass on Winston Justice, who should shift to his natural position of Left Tackle and replace soon-to-be free agent Tra Thomas.
15. Denver Broncos(f. Atl) - Chad Jackson, WR Florida* Other options: RB Laurence Maroney, TE Leonard Pope, DB Donte Whitner
The Broncos have been the most active team in regards to trading and acquiring draft picks, having once been in possession of the #22 and #29 overall selections in the first round. Now they sit squarely in the middle of the 1st round, with a number of areas and positions they could address. They'll give a hard look at adding a playmaking Tight End, or adding the perfect compliment to their zone-blocking offense in Minnesota RB Laurence Maroney. But in the end, after years of clammering to find Rod Smith's replacement, they choose a skilled newcomer in Florida's Chad Jackson.
16. Miami Dolphins - Jonathan Joseph, CB South Carolina* Other options : OLB Chad Greenway, CB Tye Hill, FS Ko Simpson
After the off-season acquisition of star QB Daunte Culpepper, the Miami Dolphins have become a shique pick to become one of the AFC's powerhouse teams in 2006. With a bright young coaching staff and a great core of offensive talent, they really need a good draft on the defensive side of the ball to solidify those lofty expectations. Miami head coach Nick Saban will start by adding some much-needed help to the defensive backfield, in speedy South Carolina corner Jon Joseph.
17. Minnesota Vikings - Roger "Rocky" McIntosh, OLB Miami Other options: RB LenDale White, OLB Chad Greenway, WR Santonio Holmes
Minnesota is on the opposite end of the football spectrum with Miami, having recently dealt their star Quarterback and the face of the franchise, Daunte Culpepper. They find themselves with a completely new coaching staff, headed by first-timer Brad Childress and two first-time coordinators. Minnesota has an assortment of areas that they could upgrade upon, but they'll make the first surprising "stretch" pick of the draft--selecting freakishly athletic but under-achieving Miami OLB, Roger "Rocky" McIntosh.
18. Dallas Cowboys - Manny Lawson, OLB NC State Other options: DB Donte Whitner, DB Jason Allen, OLB Chad Greenway
Dallas enters 2006 in a potential do-or-die scenario with head coach Bill Parcells facing another retirement. The Cowboys took a big step in the conversion to a Parcells-patented 34-defense with the selection of DeMarcus Ware in the 2005 draft. While an upgrade at free safety, cornerback, and the offensive line are imminent, Parcells will take the extra step in ensuring a dominant outside defense with the selection of athletic NC State defensive end Manny Lawson.
19. San Diego Chargers - Donte Whitner, DB Ohio State* Other options: WR Santonio Holmes, FS Ko Simpson, CB Antonio Cromartie
The Chargers will have a lot to overcome in 2006 with the ushering in of a new guard, in QB Philip Rivers. But more importantly to their potential success, is the need to upgrade one of the league's worst pass defenses. Over the years the Chargers have repeatedly tried to mend this issue by drafting the likes of Quentin Jammer, Sammy Davis, and Drayton Florence on the first day of the draft. None have worked out too well, but they're happy to see one of the draft's rising defensive talents fall to them at 19. Donte Whitner is a torpedo defender who is versatile enough to contribute right away at Free Safety, Strong Safety, Nickel DB and on special teams.
20. Kansas City Chiefs - Antonio Cromartie, CB Florida State* Other options: WR Santonio Holmes, DT John McCargo, DB Jason Allen
The Chiefs took a big step in establishing a foundation for defense in 2005, but they clearly have not reached the pinnacle yet. There could be some temptation to select a playmaking WR like Ohio State's Santonio Holmes, but the Chiefs offense has consistently been productive without a star on the outside. With new head coach Herman Edwards--a former defensive back--now at the helm, they'll have a hard time passing on Florida State's Antonio Cromartie, a game-changing type of athlete at the cornerback position.
21. New England Patriots - Tye Hill, CB Clemson Other options: WR Santonio Holmes, RB DeAngelo Williams, OLB Bobby Carpenter
For the first time in seemingly forever, Bill Billichick and co. weren't hoisting the Lombardi trophy in early February. After key losses like K Adam Vinatieri and OLB Willie McGinest, the Patriots will look to a strong draft to start to rebuild the foundation of their team. They could look to go 34-OLB here, with Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter(a very comparable player to current-Patriot Mike Vrabel), or even add some fresh legs to the backfield in Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams. But there is a glaring need for a competent man-cover corner on the outside, and they'll find that in Clemson's Tye Hill.
22. San Francisco 49ers(f. Den f. Was) - DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis Other options: DB Jason Allen, OLB Bobby Carpenter, OLB Chad Greenway
The 49ers were on the other end of a deal with the Denver Broncos, swapping their 2nd and 3rd round draft choices to catapult to the latter half of the 1st round. There is an obvious need for defensive secondary help and a pass-rushing presence, but with the league's worst ranked offense, a young Quarterback and no clear-cut starter at runningback, they'll aid Alex Smith's progression in a big way by adding dynamic Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams to the fold. 49ers Head Coach Mike Nolan coached DeAngelo Williams in the Senior Bowl and was reportedly enamored with him.
23. Tampa Bay Bucs - John McCargo, DT NC State* Other options: DB Jason Allen, WR Santonio Holmes, OLB Chad Greenway
The Buccaneers surprised many in 2005 by competing in a competitive NFC South and making the playoffs. To further their progression, there are a number of areas they could upgrade. Perhaps they look to add another weapon to young QB Chris Simms's arsenal, like Ohio State WR Santonio Holmes. They could also upgrade an aging linebacker corps with someone like Iowa's Chad Greenway. Running a successful cover-2 defense, a beloved practice of Tampa defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, relies heavily on having an athletic defensive line to put pressure on the opposition's QB. While Chris Hovan was a pleasent surprise for the Bucs and has since been re-signed, they'll have a hard time passing on an ideal 1-gap penetrator like NC State's John McCargo.
24. Cincinnati Bengals - Marcedes Lewis, TE UCLA Other options: DT Gabriel Watson, OLB Chad Greenway, DB Jason Allen
While the Bengals' biggest concern heading into the '06 season will be the health of Carson Palmer, the always defensive-minded Marvin Lewis will definitely be looking to upgrade a "bend but dont break" 2005 defensive unit. With most of the premiere defensive line talent off of the board, the Bengals will have a hard time passing on UCLA's dynamic tight end, Marcedes Lewis.
25. NY Giants - Jason Allen, DB Tennessee Other options: OLB Chad Greenway, WR Santonio Holmes, OT Eric Winston
The Giants enjoyed a division title and playoff berth in Eli Manning's 2nd season at Quarterback, but a disappointing blowout loss to the Panthers has them wanting more. The pieces are largely there on offense, but some defensive roleplayers would only benefit the team. The Giants could look at a complimentary linebacker here, but with the off-season addition of LaVar Arrington, they'll find better value in adding a versatile defensive back like Tennessee's Jason Allen. Allen suffered a severe hip injury in the 2005 season, but he has since rebounded to be considered one of the top defensive backs in this year's draft class.
26. Chicago Bears - Chad Greenway, OLB Iowa Other options: CB Richard Marshall, TE Joe Klopfenstein, OLB Bobby Carpenter
The Bears found success in 2005 despite inconsistent QB play and an offense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL. With the off-season signing of QB Brian Griese and a solid backfield, they'll turn to defense in the draft--despite being the #2 defense in the NFL in 2005. The Bears linebacker corps boasted two Pro Bowlers in '05, in MLB Brian Urlacher and OLB Lance Briggs. But there is room for improvement at the strongside linebacker position, and they'll be able to find that in Chad Greenway, one of the draft's best cover-men at linebacker.
27. Carolina Panthers - Joe Klopfenstein, TE Colorado Other options: DT Gabriel Watson, TE Marcedes Lewis, RB LenDale White
The breakout season of diminutively-sized wide receiver Steve Smith was a boost that propelled the Carolina Panthers to the NFC title game. With a defense that will return All-Pro defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, the Panthers will likely look towards the offensive side of the ball to ensure another run of success in 06. With the afforementioned Smith and new addition Keyshawn Johnson at wide receiver, one of the dire needs for the Panthers offense is a balanced Tight End. In Colorado's Joe Klopfenstein, they find a versatile player who can block and also find seams that exploits a defense.
28. Jacksonville Jaguars - Laurence Maroney, RB Minnesota* Other options: RB Joe Addai, OC Nick Mangold, OLB Bobby Carpenter
With a 12-4 record in 2005, the Jaguars and their dominant defense surprised many by appearing in the playoffs. They were quickly eliminated by the Patriots, and their up-and-coming coaching staff lead by Jack Del Rio will aim to change that in '06. One glaring need in '05 was a complimentary cornerback to go with All-Pro Rashean Mathis, but the Jaguars signed former Vikings CB Brian Williams to a long-term deal in the off-season. With Fred Taylor potentially on his last leg, and Greg Jones downgraded to primarily playing Fullback, the Jaguars will look to take a shot on a brilliant cut-back runner in Minnesota's Laurence Maroney.
29. NY Jets(f. Den) - Bobby Carpenter, OLB Ohio State Other options: DB Jimmy Williams, RB LenDale White, OC Nick Mangold
The New York Jets acquired an additional 1st round draft choice in the 2006 NFL draft for the services of Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham. By moving up to draft Reggie Bush early in the 1st round, they've found their runner of the future and can turn to defense. With Eric Mangini bringing along a full-fledged 34-defensive scheme, they'll have a hard time passing on skilled Ohio State rusher Bobby Carpenter.
30. Indianapolis Colts - Joe Addai, RB LSU Other options: OC Nick Mangold, DB Jimmy Williams, CB Richard Marshall
The Indianapolis Colts ran rampant through the regular season in '05, threatening the Miami Dolphins perfect regular season record. But when it came time to perform in the playoffs, they went into a shell and succumbed to the will and desire of the eventual champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Colts defense finally came together under defensive-genius Tony Dungey in 2005, and the loss of Edgerrin James to the Arizona Cardinals in the off-season is clearly a pressing need. GM Bill Polian will do his best to replace James, by adding a versatile runner who is adept in the passing game, in LSU's Joseph Addai.
31. Seattle Seahawks - Santonio Holmes, WR Ohio State* Other options: OG Max Jean-Gilles, CB Richard Marshall, DE Tamba Hali
The defending NFC Champions lost one of the best offensive guards in the game during the off-season shuffle in Steve Hutchinson, but largely return the same squad that lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl XL. They could look to upgrade their individual pass rush as well as the defensive backfield, but after losing a good chunk of last year's production in Joe Jurevicius, they'll go with speedy Ohio State wideout Santonio Holmes.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - LenDale White, RB USC* Other options: OG Max Jean-Gilles, FS Ko Simpson, ILB D'Qwell Jackson
The Steelers are coming off of a spotless performence against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL, but still have plenty of areas of need that they could upgrade upon. A dynamic pass-rusher like Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter is an option, as well as a road-grader on the inside of the offensive line like Georgia's Max Jean-Gilles. But after losing long-tenured short yardage demon Jerome Bettis, they find the perfect replacement in USC's LenDale White.
Round 2 33. Houston Texans - Eric Winston, OT Miami 34. New Orleans Saints - Nick Mangold, OC Ohio State 35. New Orleans Saints(f. NYJ) -Richard Marshall, CB Fresno State 36. Green Bay Packers - Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech 37. Oakland Raiders - Max Jean-Gilles, OG Georgia 38. Denver Broncos(f. SF) - Leonard Pope, TE Georgia 39.
