It was about this time last year I was banging my head in frustration asking myself why the Raiders did not pick Aaron Rodgers, and I'm doing exactly the same thing this year.
With the 7th overall pick in the draft the Raiders selected Michael Huff, a tweener CB/S from Texas, with Matt Leinart, the former Heisman trophy winning QB from USC, still on the board. It brought flooding back memories of last year when the Raiders selected Fabian Washington over Aaron Rodgers, another Californian quarterback.
I could not believe my eyes and ears, I felt for sure Leinart would be a Raider as soon as the NY Jets passed him up, and if you look at the Raiders QB situation you can see why.
Penciled in as starter you have Aaron Brooks, infamous for his terrible decision making over the past years as QB of the Saints. Then as his back up have Andrew Walter, the untried 3rd round pick from last year who was not able to get healthy for all of last season because of shoulder problems.
It looked the perfect situation for Leinart to step in and take the reins. He would have had perhaps the most talented wide reciever corps in the league to work with and he would have been able to stay in California but then we should have remembered the classic quote - "Al Davis does not use his 1st round picks on Quarterbacks".
As for us Raider fans it leaves us wondering what lies in store for '06 with either the unpredictable Aaron Brooks or the untried Andrew Walter at quarterback.
