This year’s Defensive End class has its headliners in Gaines Adams of Clemson and Jamaal Anderson of Arkansas and with a very good amount of talent behind them. One player though that I do believe should’ve been Indy this week was Darius Sanders or Oregon. Darius just got off an excellent senior season and possesses a solid size and speed combo. I doubt he would’ve “wowed” anybody, but it would’ve been nice to see him workout. I think a player who will “wow” people however is Anthony Spencer of Purdue. Anthony has showed up at a very solid 6-3 261 lbs. and there are strong rumors of him running in the 4.4’s would could boost him into the first Round. A few other players I expect to help themselves this week are Adam Carriker of Nebraska, Charles Johnson of Georgia, Ikaika Alama-Francis of Hawaii, Jay Moore of Nebraska, and Jarvis Moss of Florida. Carriker couldn’t be stopped at the Senior Bowl and his freakish combination of size, speed, and strength will yet again be on display in Indy. Charles Johnson is expected to have a very good workout. He is a good athlete and possesses good strength. From what I’ve been hearing, he workouts out faster then what he usually looks on the field so it should be interesting to watch Charles during his drills. Ikaika Alama-Francis is still learning the Defensive End position, but you can’t overlook his freakish combination of size, athletic ability, and strength. Though still a bit lanky and could still add strength, Ikaika has good strength and is very athletic. Expect him to look very strong and solidify himself as a second round pick. Like his teammate Adam Carriker, Jay Moore is a very good all around Defensive End and he should be able to show off his athletic ability and strength. Also like his teammate, Moore pretty much couldn’t be stopped while in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. Finally, I think Jarvis Moss is going to have a big day. Not the strongest guy, but is extremely quick and should have some great times in the speed drills. He will also look good in the on-field drills in my opinion. I think if you’re looking for a guy that is going to hurt himself the most, I think you need to look at Chase Pittman of LSU. Pittman possesses good strength, but he isn’t very athletic and got shut down in mobile due to this. He isn’t going to time very well and he is going to have to relay on his on-field production if he wants to get drafted. A few other players that I expect not to perform so well are Mkristo Bruce of Washington State, C.J. Ah You of Oklahoma, and Abraham Wright of Colorado. Mkristo’s on-field production is amazing and the guy has a great motor, but Mkristo isn’t the most athletic or the strongest player and that combination don’t usually mix well at the Combine. C.J. Ah You is in a similar boat, though I believe he does have a lot more strength then Mkristo. Ah You isn’t the most athletic guy though and he will more then likely take a hit this week. Though a good athlete, Abraham Wright is very undersized and lacks strength. He also isn’t a blazer like some of these other undersized Defensive Ends, but he will put up a solid forty. Depending on how much they do, I doubt my opinion on the number one defensive end is between Gaines Adams and Jamaal Anderson will change, but we will see. There will be a lot of people behind them trying to fight to get into the first and second rounds, so this should be a very interesting workout for the young Defensive Ends. |
