My first mock draft in a few weeks, it comes with the conclusion of the NFL season and the combine right around the bend. The second round has been added and many changes have been made:
1. Oakland Raiders- JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU- It's a possibility that someone by the likes of Matt Schaub or Donovan McNabb could come to Oakland, but Russell is the type of strong-armed quarterback the Raiders love and until a move happens, Russell looks like the likely pick for the Oakland Raiders. Calvin Johnson is the type of receiver the Raiders need, but they can't continue to go on with Andrew Walter or Aaron Brooks as quarterback. 2. Detroit Lions- Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin- The debate for the Lions comes down to Brady Quinn and Joe Thomas. Kitna is old and has turnover problems, but the Lions have a lot of needs and whether quarterback is their most important need is a big question. They could very well go ahead and grab Quinn here, but Thomas seems like the more likely pick, because they need help at tackle badly. 3. Cleveland Browns- Alan Branch, DT, Michigan- The Browns have three great options at the third pick with Brady Quinn, Adrian Peterson, and Alan Branch. Charlie Frye was less than stellar this season, so seeing them take Quinn at the 3rd pick would be no surprise. Peterson seems like a very logical pick, because they need an upgrade over Reuben Droughns. However, Branch is the great nose tackle the Browns need, and with Ted Washington getting up there, they need a replacement. Plus, there are better options at quarterback and running back later on than there are at defensive tackle, and overall Branch is the best prospect of the three. 4. Tampa Bay Buccanneers- Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech- Calvin Johnson is too good for the Bucs to pass up at #4. Johnson is the draft's best prospect and the Bucs are slim at the receiver position. They need D-line help badly, but with Johnson still on the board, they can't pass him over for Jamaal Anderson or Gaines Adams. 5. Arizona Cardinals- Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas- The Cardinals need an offensive tackle badly, but Levi Brown is a reach here, so they address their defensive end needs by drafting Jamaal Anderson. Anderson is a star pass rusher and that is what the Cardinals really need in a defensive end, so Anderson makes sense. 6. Washington Redskins- Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville- Okoye's performance at the Senior Bowl has established his place as a top prospect, and lacking a great tackle to go alongside Cornelius Griffin, Okoye is a great choice for the Redskins here. Okoye is hardly their only option however. They may look to defensive end rather than tackle and draft Gaines Adams, and Darrelle Revis is an option here as well for the team has no depth at the cornerback position. 7. Minnesota Vikings- Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson- It comes down to Gaines Adams, Ted Ginn, and Dwayne Jarrett here for the Vikings, but Adams is the best pick. Both wide receiver and defensive end are major needs, but Adams is the best player available. Darrion Scott is nothing special and Kenechi Udeze isn't getting it done. By getting Adams, they could have a end duo of Erasmus James and Gaines Adams next year, with James returning from injury. 8. Houston Texans- Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma- There is no way the Texans can pass up on Peterson. Ron Dayne, Wali Lundy, and Samkon Gado are not exactly the ideal guys to carry the load at running back, and Domanick Williams' future is much in question. Peterson would be the right guy to carry the load and although they could choose to upgrade their quarterback situation by drafting Brady Quinn, they really need a guy who can carry the load at running back. 9. Miami Dolphins- Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame- It just doesn't seem very likely that Cam Cameron can get his offense rolling with Daunte Culpepper or Joey Harrington at the helm. Neither got it done in 2006, and although the Dolphins may opt to give Culpepper one more year, the smartest idea is to draft Quinn and allow him a year behind Culpepper to learn the system, and if Culpepper struggles mightily once again, Quinn can be called upon. If Culpepper can rebound, they will have to find a new home for him, but he hasn't been right for a few years now. 10. Atlanta Falcons- Reggie Nelson, S, Florida- This was a tough one between Ted Ginn and Reggie Nelson, but the Falcons lack secondary depth and Milloy is aging, so addressing their secondary needs is a big must for the Falcons. Ginn may be the best player available here and a great spark to the offense, but they don't have much aside from DeAngelo Hall in the secondary so drafting Reggie Nelson makes a lot of sense here. 11. San Francisco 49ers- Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State- Drafting Ted Ginn may be the big spark the Niners really need. They have an aspiring young quarterback in Alex Smith and a great young running back in Frank Gore, and by adding a huge playmaker threat in Ted Ginn, the Niners could find themselves in the near future with a star-studded offense. 12. Buffalo Bills- Patrick Willis, ILB, Mississippi State- London Fletcher is a pending free agent, and is undersized to play the middle, so the Bills are looking for an upgrade in the middle, making Willis the best pick here. 13. St. Louis Rams- Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State- The Rams would like a serious upgrade over Brandon Chillar, and Timmons is the premier outside linebacker in the draft this year. They could look to defensive end as well, making Jarvis Moss and Adam Carriker other options, but Timmons seems to be the best pick for the Rams. 14. Carolina Panthers- Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska- Clearly LaRon Landry seems like the obvious pick here, but I beg to differ. The Panthers could use a safety, sure, but it's not a big need for them. While Mike Rucker and Al Wallace are fine defensive ends, bringing in someone new to go across from Peppers may be a good idea. The tandem of Julius Peppers and Carriker at ends would clearly wreak havoc on opposing offenses, plus with the duo of Kris Jenkins and Maake Kemoeatu inside, the Panthers would considerably have the NFL's best defensive line. 15. Pittsburgh Steelers- Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh- The Steelers could still use another young guy to add to the cornerback mix and Revis already knows Pittsburgh. With two talented young backs already in Pittsburgh in Taylor and McFadden, but not a whole lot behind them, adding Revis to the mix would give them a good young crop of corners. 16. Green Bay Packers- Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal- It comes down to Lynch and Landry here, but the Packers could use an impact addition to their offense, and Ahman Green is getting up there in years. Lynch is a very good prospect who is good value and good really help out their offense for the future. Landry is great value and Marquand Manuel was a dissapointment this year, but Lynch is a very good pick for the Packers here. 17. Jacksonville Jaguars- LaRon Landry, S, LSU- Deon Grant could be on his way out of Jacksonville, and Landry is great value at the 17th pick. Leon Hall is an option as well because the team has little depth at cornerback, but the Jaguars should go with the better value here in Landry. 18. Cincinatti Bengals- Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida- Moss is versatile, as he can be either a defensive end or a linebacker, and with the Bengals looking for potential upgrades all over their defense, it seems to come down to Moss and Leon Hall here. Seeing a defensive end/linebacker would be more useful to the Bengals than a cornerback however, Moss is the pick here. 19. Tennessee Titans- Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC- The Titans are left with a tough decision here. The Titans lack a true #1 threat and Jarrett is great value here, but the Titans are also in need of a corner and Leon Hall is still available. While Hall is probably more of a need pick, with the team needing a #1 wide receiver, the Titans will likely snap up Jarrett. 20. New York Giants- Leon Hall, CB, Michigan- With Hall still being available, there is no way the Giants can pass him up. The Giants need cornerbacks badly and Hall is the best player available at the 20th pick. 21. Denver Broncos- Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia- After an abysmal senior season, Quentin Moses' stock has suffered badly and whether he is worth a first-round pick is a question. However, with the top defensive ends (Anderson, Adams, Carriker, Moss) and the top cornerbacks (Revis, Hall) all gone here, the pick is either Moses or Victor Abiamiri here. 22. Dallas Cowboys- Michael Griffin, S, Texas- With the team still looking for a top free safety to go alongside Roy Williams, Griffin is a great pick for the Cowboys here. With a lot of secondary issues, it comes down to two Longhorn defensive backs here- either Griffin or cornerback Aaron Ross. 23. Kansas City Chiefs- Levi Brown, OT, Penn State- The Chiefs are in major need of a defensive tackle, but Levi Brown is much better value than DeMarcus Tyler here, and with offensive tackle a huge need as well, the Chiefs cannot pass on Brown here. 24. New England Patriots- Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU- The Patriots lack a great receiving threat and with Bowe still available at 24 the Patriots have to snap him up. 25. New York Jets- Aaron Ross, CB, Texas- Justin Miller is a free agent, and the Jets have very little behind Miller and Andre Dyson anyways. That makes drafting a corner is a need and Ross' stock has shot up recently. Greg Olsen and DeMarcus Tyler are options as well, but Ross seems like the best option here. 26. Philadelphia Eagles- Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State- The Eagles are in need of bringing in a linebacker and Posluszny is one of the premier linebackers in the draft. They could opt for Sidney Rice here as the Eagles still lack a true #1 threat, but Posluszny seems like the best pick here. 27. New Orleans Saints- Daymeion Hughes, CB, Cal- The Saints could use to add a top talent at cornerback which makes Daymeion Hughes a good pick for the Saints here. Justin Blalock and Jon Beason are also options, but Hughes is the best pick for them here. 28. New England Patriots- Jon Beason, OLB, Miami (FL)- The Patriots really need linebackers to replenish their aging group, and Beason would be a great additon for them. They also need secondary help so Daymeion Hughes is an option here as well, but Beason is the best pick for them here. 29. Baltimore Ravens- Justin Blalock, G, Texas- The Ravens are going to be looking for a linebacker here if they lose Adalius Thomas, but Blalock is of much better value than all of the linebackers still available and the team needs to address their line problems at some point during the draft. 30. San Diego Chargers- Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina- While Vincent Jackson did have a breakout year, the Chargers don't have a lot else at the WR position, so bringing another youngster into the mix with their first pick makes sense. That makes Sidney Rice the best pick here. 31. Chicago Bears- Arron Sears, OT, Tennessee- With the line aging, it is time to bring in some young guys for the line. Arron Sears can play both tackle and guard and is one of the draft's top offensive linemen. They could also opt for Ben Grubbs or Joe Staley, or go for a tight end in Zach Miller or Greg Olsen. 32. Indianapolis Colts- Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame- The Colts are in desperate need of improving their run defense, so that's what we expect them to address. So why Abiamiri? If the Colts do not resign Freeney, they are going to need a replacement, which Abiamiri can be. However, Abiamiri may be better as an outside linebacker. Abiamiri would project more as a linebacker in a 3-4, but he is one of the best prospects available left, so Abiamiri is the pick.
Round 2
33. Oakland Raiders- Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee- They grabbed their QB in JaMarcus Russell with the 1st pick, but with Moss or Porter both likely on the outs, he's going to need a target. Robert Meachem is a great option to be that guy. Ben Grubbs would also be a good pick here, as the Raiders need to overhaul their line, but by drafting Meachem they get their skills guys first and look to fill their many other needs as the drafts wears on. 34. Detroit Lions- Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia- With Cory Redding moving inside, it leaves the Lions with a big need at defensive end. Johnson is the better players available and the best defensive end left on the board. 35. Cleveland Browns- Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn- After overpassing both Quinn and Peterson in round one, they need to look to the offense in round 2. Kenny Irons is a talented prospect and an upgrade from Reuben Droughns for their backfield. Michael Bush and Tony Hunt are options here as well at running back. They could also look at drafting Joe Staley as an upgrade at offensive tackle. They could go for Troy Smith here as well- but he would be a huge reach. 36. Tampa Bay Buccanneers- Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue- The Buccanneers' line is a mess, and neither Dewayne White nor Greg Spires are ideal starters at end. That is why it is a necessity to draft a defensive end here and Anthony Spencer is the best one available. 37. New York Jets- DeMarcus Tyler, DT, NC State- They need a guy who can be their true nose tackle as Dewayne Robertson doesn't fit the bill, and with Tyler still available, they can not pass him up at the 37th pick. Although they could look to draft Greg Olsen to upgrade at tight end, they are better suited by drafting their nose tackle in Tyler at the 37th pick. 38. Arizona Cardinals- Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan- No question the Cardinals have to grab an offensive tackle here with Leonard Davis on the outs, so Staley is the pick. 39. Houston Texans- Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn- The Texans are still looking to get that line just up to average, and as Grubbs is one of the best players available, this just makes sense. 40. Miami Dolphins- Earl Everett, OLB, Florida- Linebacker is one of the Dolphins' biggest needs, so they stay in their home state with their second-rounder and pick Earl Everett here. 41. Minnesota Vikings- Aundrae Allison, WR, East Carolina- Somewhat raw, lacking top D-1 experience with only 2 years of D-1 ball at East Carolina. However, Allison is very talented and with the Vikings needing to go receiver here, Allison gets the nod, although Anthony Gonzalez and Chansi Stuckey are options too. 42. San Francisco 49ers- Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas- Shawntae Spencer and Walt Harris are great starters, but the 49ers have nothing behind them. Houston would fit great as a nickel back in San Fran and is one of the best players available at 42. Quinn Pitcock is an option as well, but Houston gets the nod. 43. Buffalo Bills- Josh Wilson, CB, Maryland- The Bills are in major risk of losing Nate Clements and even so lack depth behind Clements and McGee. While it's hard to pass up Greg Olsen here, the Bills really need to address their secondary needs and draft a great prospect here in Josh Wilson. 44. Atlanta Falcons- Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State- The Falcons could some reinforcment inside and Pitcock is a good value in the middle of the second round. The Falcons could also opt for a receiver here with Anthony Gonzalez. 45. Carolina Panthers- H.B Blades, ILB, Pittsburgh- Whether Dan Morgan will ever play again remains in question, so drafting a linebacker here is a necessity. They have a lot of options- H.B Blades, Buster Davis, Brandon Siler, and David Harris would all be good picks here, but Blades is the pick here. 46. Pittsburgh Steelers- Ryan Kalil, C, USC- Jeff Hartings retired, so center is a big need. Ryan Kalil is the only top center prospect in the draft, so they need to grab him here. 47. Green Bay Packers- Eric Weddle, S, Utah- After passing on Landry in the first, safety remains a major need, so Eric Weddle makes a lot of sense here. 48. Jacksonville Jaguars- Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State- Byron Leftwich and David Garrard were both very dissapointing, leaving the Jaguars a hole for a starting quarterback. There's a good chance Stanton won't be around when the Jaguars pick in the 3rd round, so he should be the pick here. 49. Cincinatti Bengals- Greg Olsen, TE, Miami- With two first-round value tight ends in Olsen and Zach Miller available, there is no way the Bengals could pass them both up. They could go either way, but I feel Olsen is the better prospect. 50. Tennessee Titans- Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State- There is no question that after passing on Leon Hall in the first they need to take McCauley here. Tanard Jackson is an option as well, but they need to grab a corner here. 51. New York Giants- Tony Ugoh, OT, Arkansas- The team passed on Levi Brown in the first and after cutting Luke Petitgout they need a replacement, so Tony Ugoh is the pick here. Brian Leonard would also be an option as a complement to Brian Jacobs, but offensive tackle is the bigger need. 52. St. Louis Rams- Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee- The Rams need a defensive tackle who is strong against the run, and Harrell is the best defensive tackle left on the board. They could also consider Anthony Gonzalez here, but the pick goes to Harrell here. 53. Dallas Cowboys- Josh Beekman, G, Boston College- Kyle Kosier has struggled and the team needs help all across the line so the pick here is Beekman. 54. Kansas City Chiefs- Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State- The team truly needs a defensive tackle, but they need receivers as well, and Anthony Gonzalez is much better value than Brandon Mebane. 55. Seattle Seahawks- Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State- Miller should have gone a round earlier than this, so with Miller still available they have to pounce with Stevens likely on the outs. 56. Denver Broncos- Tanard Jackson, CB, Syracuse- The team's secondary problems were elevated with the tragic loss of Darrent Williams, and Jackson can contribute at both corner and safety. 57. Philadelphia Eagles- Chansi Stuckey, WR, Clemson- The Eagles still lack that true #1 target, and while Stuckey probably isn't ever going to be a true #1 target either, he is the best receiver available. 58. New Orleans Saints- Buster Davis, ILB, Florida State- Potential first-rounder who is great value late in the second round, and the Saints could use an upgrade in the middle. 59. New York Jets- Brian Leonard, FB, Rutgers- Leon Washington may never much of a workhorse back so they need to bring another guy in there. Pairing Washington and Leonard would give them a strong backfield as both could split the carries. 60. New England Patriots- Brandon Siler, ILB, Florida- The Patriots need help at inside linebacker, so it comes down to Siler and Harris here. They could opt for a corner in David Irons, but Siler is the best pick. 61. Baltimore Ravens- Michael Bush, RB, Louisville- The Ravens need a young running back in the system. Michael Bush is great value late in the second round. 62. San Diego Chargers- Brandon Merriweather, S, Miami (FL)- The team hasn't seemed to have problems drafting guys with character issues in the past and Merriweather is first-round talent. 63. Chicago Bears- Scott Chandler, TE, Iowa- After passing on Zach Miller and Greg Olsen in the first, they should get their upgrade from Desmond Clark here by drafting Scott Chandler, who is quickly rising up draft boards. 64. Tampa Bay Buccanneers- Brandon Mebane, DT, Cal- The team grabbed a defensive end early in round 2, now they go inside with Brandon Mebane.
