Detroit Lions Draft Preview

The Lions with much improvement necessary. That should be clear enough in the fact that they were awarded the 2nd pick in the draft. But how will they look to fill those needs? Will they use their #2 pick on a franchise quarterback? Is Calvin Johnson an option at #2? When the 2nd pick of the 2007 NFL Draft is made, will the player be holding up a Lions jersey? There are lots of questions regarding the Lions draft, and here are some potential answers.

Lions Draft Picks

1st round- Pick #2

2nd round- Pick #34

3rd round- Pick #66

4th round- Pick #101

5th round- Pick #139

Lions Top Draft Needs (with round which it should be addressed)

1. Quarterback- 1st-2nd round

Jon Kitna is alright in the short-term, but the Lions need to find a long-term guy. Joey Harrington didn't quite work out, but they're going to have to take their chances and hope that in either JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, or Drew Stanton, they find the guy who does. They won't necessarily go quarterback in the first round, although it is the best pick for them, and if they don't, expect Drew Stanton to be their pick in the second round.

2. Defensive End- 1st-2nd round

The expectation is that the Lions will draft Brady Quinn in the first round, but a popular choice among recent mocks has been the Lions trading down from the #2 spot and drafting Gaines Adams. If they do end up trading down, Adams is the best pick for them. If they don't end up with Gaines Adams, then they should go after a defensive end in the second round. With Cory Redding moving inside and the loss of James Hall, they find themselves with two defensive ends better suited as backups in Dewayne White and Kalimba Edwards as their starters.

3. Cornerback- 2nd-3rd round

After trading Dre Bly, the Lions find themselves with lack of a true #1 corner. Travis Fisher is a solid cornerback, but there isn't much behind him and Fisher is more of a #2 corner. Whether the 2nd or 3rd round will supply a true #1 corner is questionable but unless they trade down cornerback is not a first-round option.

4. Middle Linebacker- 3rd-4th round

Paris Lenon isn't really a middle linebacker and Teddy Lehman has struggled with injuries. They could go with a middle linebacker as early as the second round, but if it takes a backseat to their more pressing defensive ends this may wait until day two unless they get a really good value.

5. Safety- 4th-5th round

Daniel Bullocks is a good young safety who should take over fine for Terrence Holt, but the Lions might want a young player who can challenge Kenoy Kennedy for his role and the Lions have no depth to speak of behind Bullocks and Kennedy.

Pick Watch

1st round- Pick #2

Ideal Pick: Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame- For the Raiders it comes down to JaMarcus Russell and Calvin Johnson seemingly, so Quinn should be there at the second pick. Quinn is the best guy for the Lions, and they should not pass up on him, but whether Matt Millen and Rod Marinelli plan to take him at #2 is a major question.

Watch out for: Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech- Roy Williams and Mike Furrey were both outstanding last year, and the Lions also signed Shaun McDonald, so drafting a wide receiver doesn't really make sense at #2, but Matt Millen has shown in recent years how he loves drafting receivers at the top of the draft (Charles Rogers, Williams, Mike Williams), and there hasn't been a prospect quite like Calvin Johnson in some time. The Lions might just find his value too good to pass up.

Trade Watch: Lions/Browns- Rumors are heavy that the Lions and Browns may swap their picks (with the Lions getting a couple more picks to compensate) so that the Browns can make good on their owner's demands and draft Brady Quinn, in which case Calvin Johnson or Gaines Adams could end up being the Lions' pick. Or they could choose to trade down a little farther even if a team can come up with a package to move up to #2 to take Calvin Johnson, in which Adams, Leon Hall, and Jamaal Anderson could all be strong candidates.

2nd round- Pick #34

Ideal Pick: Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia- If no one grabs Johnson in the first round, then he makes a lot of sense for the Lions in the second, as a replacement for James Hall. That's if they take Brady Quinn in the first round. And if not... then Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State is the ideal pick for the Lions here. If they do decide to trade down from #2 or pass on Quinn altogether, then Stanton is the ideal pick in the second round, and there's no way he'll be passed upon.

Watch out for: Eric Wright, CB, UNLV- Wright is a great talent whose stock would probably be higher if he had not been kicked off the USC football squad and been forced to transfer to UNLV. Wright could easily go in the first round but if he is still there at the Lions pick, they may grab him to fill their need at cornerback.

3rd round- Pick #66

Ideal Pick: Buster Davis, MLB, Florida State- Buster Davis, H.B Blades, and Brandon Siler could all be this guy. Davis, Blades, and Siler are all second-round values as middle linebackers but chances are at least one of them will fall to the third round. If that is the case, the Lions should pounce on their opportunity.

Watch out for: David Irons, CB, Auburn- The Lions really need to get themselves a cornerback on Day 1, to help compensate for the loss of Dre Bly. David Irons has proven at the Senior Bowl and at his workouts that he has all the skills. He would be a good value at this point and would make a lot of sense especially if Davis and Blades are taken.

Trade Watch: If the Lions do end up trading down, there is a good possibility they'll end up with another Day 1 pick out of it, but if not, it would be a good idea to trade for one, because they really need to try to come away with a quarterback, defensive end, middle linebacker, and cornerback out of day one.

4th round- Pick #101

Ideal Pick: Travarous Bain, CB, Hampton- If they can't get a cornerback on Day 1, then Bain might just be their guy if he's there. Bain is a Division 1-AA standout and is a third-round value who could very still be there in the fourth round.

Watch out for:

- Daymeion Hughes, CB, Cal- After Hughes' disastrous combine, he may end up waiting until Day 2 to hear his name called. Regardless, he would be a great pick for the Lions in the fourth round if available to help them out at cornerback.

- Dan Bazuin, DE, Central Michigan- Although they should end up going with a defensive end in the first two rounds, they could really use two potential starters, and Bazuin would be a real good value if he falls to the fourth.

5th round- 4 picks

Guys to watch out for:

- Michael Johnson, S, Arizona- If Johnson falls to the fifth round, he would be a great addition for the Lions' secondary. He could very likely be gone by the end of the fourth however.

- Adam Koets, OT, Oregon St.- Offensive line could very well be a point of address on Day 1, but after acquiring George Foster on Day 1, it is not a major need. Adam Koets is a good prospect who could strike the Lions' interest in the fifth round if available. Koets is not a first-day type prospect, but he has good upside and could turn out to be a solid offensive tackle in the NFL. At the very least he provides depth.

- Ryan Smith, CB, Florida- Ryan Smith could be a great nickel/dime type cornerback in the NFL and could be one of the guys who ranks high on the Lions' Day 2 draft radar.
