Cleveland Browns Draft Preview
Browns owner Randy Lerner has given general manager Phil Savage and his staff a command which isn't nearly as simple as it sounds: draft a franchise quarterback with the first pick. Here's the problem for the Browns: if the Raiders take Russell, and the Lions take Quinn, both of the top quarterbacks will be gone. So what will the Browns do? Will the Browns wheel and deal into the top two? Will the cards fall their way leaving a franchise quarterback in their lap? If not Quinn or Russell, is Drew Stanton #3? Or is it Calvin Johnson?
Browns Draft Picks
1st round- Pick #3
2nd round- Pick #36
3rd round- Pick #67
4th round- Pick #103
5th round- Pick #140
6th round- Pick #178
7th round- Pick #213
Browns Team Needs (with round which need should be addressed)
1. Quarterback- 1st round-
There's no questioning what Randy Lerner wants. And seeing he's the one who's paying Phil Savage and his staff's salaries, Savage is going to want to make good on Lerner's wants. JaMarcus Russell, the draft's elite quarterback prospect, should be #1 on their draft board, and Brady Quinn, the draft's other top quarterback prospect, should be #2. If they don't end up with Russell or Quinn, Drew Stanton should be their second-round pick, but I would not expect the Browns to stay put with that third pick if it means missing out on Russell and Quinn.
2. Defensive End- 1st-2nd round-
A very thin unit here. There is little pass rush to speak of as their current starters are Robaire Smith and Orpheus Roye, neither of whom are the most forceful of pass rushers out there.
3. Cornerback- 2nd-3rd round-
A definite need for the Browns. Gary Baxter may not even play this season due to injury and the best the Browns have after him are Leigh Bodden, Demario Minter, and Kenny Wright.
4. Offensive Tackle- 3rd-4th round-
They could go after an offensive tackle as high as the second, but with so many other needs it doesn't seem likely the Browns would go for an offensive tackle high in the draft. Regardless, they could definitely use upgrades over Kevin Shaffer and Ryan Tucker.
5. Nose Tackle- 4th-5th round-
Ted Washington is aging, and Shaun Smith is average at best, leaving this as one of the Browns' many defensive needs, but not their most important at this point.
Pick Watch
1st round- Pick #3
Ideal Pick: JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU-It is very likely that the Raiders will draft Russell, but if the Raiders take Calvin Johnson, Russell could end up being there when the Browns are on the clock. A more likely scenario is that they will trade up to #2 and take Brady Quinn, because staying put might not warrant in them selecting a quarterback... but what if Russell and Quinn are gone... how about Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State ? The pick would make no sense, seeing that they could probably get Stanton in the second round, but the orders are to take a quarterback with the first pick, so will Savage do whatever it takes to do so?
Watch out for:
-Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech- Don't expect the Browns to stay put at #3 if they can't get a quarterback with that pick, but if they do, then Calvin Johnson may just end up being the pick. While they have many bigger needs than wide receiver, they just go to the draft board if they can't get Russell or Quinn, and the next highest player on the board might be Calvin.
-Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson- It's unlikely, but the Browns do need a pass rusher, and they could go with Gaines Adams if they can't get one of the top quarterbacks. Adams has been moving his way up draft boards, and may just be the best pick for the Browns after Russell and Quinn.
2nd pick- Pick #36
Ideal Pick: DeMarcus Tyler, DT, NC State- If Tyler is available, they should take him based on his value more than for need. Tyler is a first-round value who if available at 36 would be a great choice for the Browns.
If they miss out on Quinn/Russell: Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State- As aforementioned, Phil Savage and his staff must take their franchise quarterback in this draft, so if they miss out on Russell and Quinn, Drew Stanton will be the pick here unless he is taken, which is unlikely. If he is, the pick could be Trent Edwards, QB, Stanford.
Watch out for:
- Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan- The Browns need upgrades at offensive tackles and Staley's stock is rising quickly. There is a good chance Staley is taken in the first, but if he's available at 36, the Browns may snatch him off the board.
- Anthony Spencer, DE/OLB, Purdue- Spencer may project more as an OLB in a 3-4 than a DE, but both are need positions for the Browns and Spencer would be a good fit.
3rd pick- Pick #67
Ideal Pick: Tim Crowder, DE, Texas- Crowder would be a steal in the third round and if they don't end up with a defensive end in the first two rounds, Crowder would be a great selection to help the Browns pass rush.
Watch out for:
- Josh Wilson, CB, Maryland- The Browns really need to bring in a cornerback in this draft and if Wilson is available he would be a good selection for the Browns here. Same goes for David Irons or Marcus McCauley.
- Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii- Alama-Francis is a large, athletic defensive end who would be a great fit for the Browns, maybe an even better pick here than Crowder because he may be a better fit as a pass rusher in a 3-4.
4th round- Pick #103
Ideal Pick: Jonathan Wade, CB, Tennessee- Jonathan Wade is a first-day talent who if he falls to Day Two, would be a great choice for the Browns. The Browns need cornerbacks and while Wade may never be a #1 type, he would be a great value in the fourth round.
Watch out for:
- Alama-Francis- There's the potential that Alama-Francis could still be here in the fourth round, and if so, he may be too good to pass up even if they take a defensive end on day one.
- Rufus Alexander, OLB, Oklahoma- As with Wade and Alama-Francis, Alexander is a first-day talent who could still be available on Day Two, and if so, would be a great choice for the Browns as Willie McGinest isn't getting any younger and they have little at the position aside from Kamerion Wimbley.
Late-Round Guys to Watch For
- Ryan Harris, OT, Notre Dame- Harris' stock has slipped, but if he's still available in the fifth round, he would be an outstanding value for the Browns nevertheless.
- Chris Henry, RB, Arizona- Henry made a name for himself after running a 4.4 at the combine, and with Jamal Lewis only signed to a one-year deal, running back is an option at anywhere from Adrian Peterson in the first round to a guy like Chris Henry late in the draft. I think the Browns will go for their running back gold next year with a guy such as Darren McFadden and Ray Rice, but they still may try to bring in a guy this year later on.
