Arizona Cardinals Draft Preview
The Cardinals' first-round pick sure is looking like it will be Joe Thomas, but the rest of the draft is not clear. The Cardinals have a number of needs, how will new head coach Ken Whisenhunt choose to address them?
Cardinals Draft Picks
1st round- Pick #5
2nd round- Pick #38
3rd round- Pick #69
4th round- Pick #105
5th round- Pick #142
7th round- Pick #215
Cardinals Top Needs (with which round they should be addressed)
1. Offensive Tackle- 1st-2nd round
Although the Cardinals signed Mike Gandy as a potential replacement for Leonard Davis, this team's target should still be Joe Thomas, and if Thomas is available at #5, there should be no hesitation on the Cardinals' part. Gandy is an average offensive lineman but the Cardinals could really use a standout left tackle to bolster a below-average line.
2. Defensive End- 1st-2nd round
The Cardinals have no real starters beside Bertrand Berry and Berry has struggled with injuries. In that case it would make sense for this team to go for a strong pass rusher early, if not Adams in the first then likely in the second.
3. Outside Linebacker- 2nd-3rd round
Orlando Huff is average at best and while Karlos Dansby has shown flashes of greatness his performance was hurt last year by a toe injury.
4. Cornerback- 3rd-4th round
Antrel Rolle, Eric Green, and Roderick Hood are a fine trio of young cornerbacks, but they team could use some better depth at the cornerback position, so it would be a good place to go on Day 2.
5. Tight End- Late rounds
With the loss of Fred Wakefield, there is no one to backup Leonard Pope.
Pick Watch
1st round- Pick #5
Ideal Pick: Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin- Thomas will most likely be available at the 5th pick and if he is there there should be no hesitation on the Cardinals' part as the Cardinals need to address the offensive line.
Watch out for: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson- If Thomas is gone, then Adams would be a great addition. Adams is the premier pass rusher in the draft and would be the pass rusher the Cardinals need to bring in early on in the draft.
2nd round- Pick #38
Ideal Pick: Anthony Spencer, DE/OLB, Purdue- Spencer would be an outstanding guy to bring in in the 2nd round, but he may not be here at this pick. If he is however, the Cardinals should give Spencer strong consideration.
Watch out for: - Ryan Kalil, C, USC- Kalil would be a great value at 38 and Matt Leinart is used to taking snaps from Kalil from their days playing together at the University of Southern California. Even if they take Thomas in the first round, and although they signed Al Johnson, this would still be a good pick, as he would help Leinart feel more comfortable with his offensive line.
- Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State- If Posluszny is there at 38, he may be too good for the Cardinals to pass up. Posluszny was highly productive in his days with the Penn State Nittany Lions and would be a steal early in the second round for the Cardinals.
3rd round- Pick #69
Ideal Pick: Justin Durant, OLB, Hampton- Durant would be a great complement to Dansby at outside linebacker and would be a great value in the third round. Durant is outstanding athletically, and is the best prospect in the NFL Draft out of Division 1-AA.
Watch out for: Brian Robison, DE, Texas- If the Cardinals doesn't grab a defensive end in the first two rounds, then Robison could be their guy early in the third round. Robison is a bit undersized, but he has outstanding athletic ability as he displayed at the combine and is one of the draft's biggest sleepers. Robison could turn out to be just the pass rusher the Cardinals covet.
4th round- Pick #105
Ideal Pick: Daymeion Hughes, CB, Cal- Hughes' stock has fell greatly since his dreadful combine workout but Hughes would be a steal in the fourth round. If Hughes is still around in the fourth round, he would be an outstanding addition to complement the Cardinals' cornerbacks.
Watch out for: Jay Moore, DE, Nebraska- Moore is a second-rounder potentially, but there is a possibility for Moore to still be around early in the fourth round, and he would be a great pass rusher for the Cardinals to bring in.
Late-Round Guys to Watch For
- Kevin Boss, TE, Western Oregon- Boss made a name for himself at the combine and he could turn out to be a real good pick for a team late in the draft.
- C.J Gaddis, CB/S, Clemson- Gaddis could project as either a cornerback or a safety in the NFL and while he would be drafted mostly on potential, he could be an interesting prospect, and the Cardinals could be a potential suitor.
