Minnesota Vikings Draft Preview
The Vikings came off a very disappointing season, but coming into the draft it is unclear what route they will take in the draft. Who do the Vikings plan to take at #7, with many good talents expected to still be available? Here's Dan Hope's ideas:
Vikings Draft Picks
1st round- Pick #7
2nd round- Pick #41
3rd round- Pick #72
4th round- Pick #104
5th round- Pick #146
6th round- Pick #182
7th round- Pick #217
Vikings Top Needs (with round which it should be addressed)
1. Wide Receiver- 1st-2nd round
Troy Williamson has not become the star he was supposed to be and the Vikings lack any big-time threats at receiver. It would make sense to grab their burner with their first-rounder, but if not in the first then they really need to find their guy in the second round. We do know that Brad Childress insists on not taking receivers in the first round, but he may have to make an exception.
2. Defensive End- 1st-2nd round
Darrion Scott was solid last year, but Erasmus James is coming off a serious knee injury and Kenechi Udeze was horrendous last year (notching not a single sack), so the Vikings definitely need to look for a defensive end early.
3. Quarterback- ?
Brad Childress insists that Tarvaris Jackson is the quarterback, but I can't help but to question his judgment. Most likely, the Vikings will stick with Jackson through this year, Jackson will struggle mightily, and welcome to the Vikings Brian Brohm. They shouldn't even necessarily look to replace Jackson. But if by some chance Brady Quinn were to fall into their lap, they shouldn't pass him up. They should at least draft a quarterback in the third or fourth round as a backup incase Jackson doesn't pan out.
4. Tight End- 3rd-4th round
The Vikings lack much of a receiving threat at tight end, so while they could even choose to trade down and draft Greg Olsen in the first, it is much more likely they draft a tight end later on.
5. Middle Linebacker- 3rd-4th round
The Vikings do have Dontarrious Thomas, but with the loss of Napoleon Harris they could use another guy.
Pick Watch
1st round- Pick #7
Ideal Pick: Brady Quinn, QB, Minnesota- Sure, the chance that Quinn is available at 7 is unlikely, but if by chance Quinn is still around when the Vikings on the clock, then they better get their pick in on time and select Quinn without hesitation, because passing on Quinn would be a horrible mistake seeing all the uncertainty surrounding Jackson.
A More Likely Ideal Pick: Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson- Adams could go anywhere from 2 to 6 but if he is not taken in the top six, Adams would be the best pick for the Vikings. The Vikings really need a true pass rusher if Erasmus James cannot fully recover, and Gaines Adams is an outstanding pass rusher.
Watch out for:
- Ted Ginn, WR, OSU- Ginn is a risk, especially as high as the 7th pick, and Brad Childress probably won't choose to take a receiver in the first round, but Ginn is extremely talented and he may be the best pick overall for the Vikings here.
- Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas- If Gaines Adams is gone, Jamaal Anderson is a very likely pick. Much like Adams, Anderson is a great pass rusher and could turn out to be the better pass rusher than Adams.
2nd round- Pick #41
Ideal Pick: Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina- Rice may become the deep threat that former Gamecock and current Viking Troy Williamson was supposed to be. Rice is a receiver who should go early on in round 2 and unless they draft Ginn in the first the Vikings should take a long look at Rice.
Watch out for: Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame- If they don't come away with their pass rusher in round one, then Abiamiri could very well be their pick in round two. Abiamiri could very well be the pass rusher they need and would be a great pick early in the second round.
3rd round- Pick #72
Ideal Pick: Brandon Siler, MLB, Florida- Siler would be a great replacement for Napoleon Harris and a great value in the third round if the Vikings get the chance to draft him.
Watch out for:
- Ben Patrick, TE, Delaware- Patrick is a great prospect who could be the receiving threat the Vikings need at tight end. Patrick might be the third-best tight end in the draft over Scott Chandler and Michael Allan and he'd make a lot of sense here.
- Trent Edwards, QB, Stanford- If they can't get Quinn, the Vikings might end up bringing in a quarterback in the third or the fourth to back up Tarvaris Jackson, and Trent Edwards would be a very good guy for the job.
4th round- Pick #104
Ideal Pick: Michael Allan, TE, Whitworth- If Allan doesn't hear his name on Day 1, he should hear it early on Day 2. The Vikings might end up picking him if he does fall to Day 2, and he could be just the receiving threat tight end that the Vikings need.
Watch out for:
- Kevin Kolb, QB, Houston- Another potential selection as a backup for Tarvaris Jackson.
- Courtney Taylor, WR, Auburn- Another guy who if he does fall to Day 2, he shouldn't have to wait long for his name to be called.
Late-Round Guys to Watch For
- Brandon Frye, OT, Virginia Tech- Ryan Cook and Marcus Johnson just haven't cut it at right tackle. They will probably wait until Day 2 to address their offensive line needs, and if they do, Frye could be the guy for them.
- Mansfield Wrotto, G, Georgia Tech- Artis Hicks hasn't exactly been great either, so Wrotto is another late-round option for the Vikings.
- Chris Leak, QB, Florida- They really need to bring in a backup at some point, and if they wait until late, Chris Leak would be a good choice.
