2007 NFL Draft Mock Draft
It's finally here. The debates and speculation will soon become reality on April 27, 2007 when the Oakland Raiders are officially on the clock. I love the debating and speculation myself, so before the draft gets started, I give you my thoughts.
Trades:
Tampa Bay receives:
1st round pick (#2)
Detroit receives:
1st round pick (#4)
2nd round pick (#35)
3rd round pick (#68)
New England receives:
1st round pick (#12)
3rd round pick (#74)
Buffalo receives:
1st round pick (#28)
CB Asante Samuel
1. Oakland Raiders- JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU- As much as I am sure the Raiders would love to acquire a standout receiver like Calvin Johnson, in the end I think it will all turn around to the fact that the Raiders aren't going to go anywhere without a franchise quarterback, and the Raiders will make the smart move and draft the true franchise quarterback in this draft in JaMarcus Russell. We know Al Davis loves quarterbacks with fantastic arms like Russell has, and with quarterback being the Raiders' biggest need, doing anything here besides drafting Russell would be a mistake.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech- The Bucs love Calvin Johnson, and if the Raiders pass him up, the Bucs may have to take any measure necessary in order to acquire him. There is a good chance Calvin could fall to the 4th pick, where the Bucs would get the star of the draft anyways, but Calvin Johnson is a special enough player where the Buccaneers would trade their 1st round pick (#4), 2nd round pick (#35), and 3rd round pick (#68) for the 2nd pick in order to draft Calvin Johnson, who may be the highest-touted prospect to come out of the draft in years.
3. Cleveland Browns- Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame- Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel have been ordered by owner Randy Lerner to take a franchise quarterback with their first pick. If Brady Quinn is available at the third pick, then the Browns will not pass him up. Quinn is a quarterback who does not possess the star qualities which Russell has, but he does have all the tools and intangibles to be a starting quarterback for many years to come.
4. Detroit Lions- Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson- If the Lions opt to trade down in the draft, Gaines Adams will be the likely target. With the loss of James Hall and Cory Redding moving inside, the Lions are now left with the starting end pair of Dewayne White and Kalimba Edwards, an average pair at best. The Lions lack an impact pass rusher and Gaines Adams is exactly that. Adams is the draft's top defensive prospect and he would make a lot of sense for the Lions.
5. Arizona Cardinals- Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin- If Joe Thomas is around at the fifth pick, the Cardinals shouldn't have to debate over who to pick at #5. The Cardinals already had a struggling offensive line, but the loss of Leonard Davis made it even more of a need position. The Cardinals really need an elite offensive lineman to start across from Reggie Wells and Joe Thomas is this year's elite offensive line prospect.
6. Washington Redskins- Amobi Okoye, DT, Louisville- A trade could very well happen here, but the question is of who would want to move up to #6. If they don't, then it comes down to LaRon Landry and Amobi Okoye. LaRon Landry would be a good pick here, but the Redskins need someone to pair inside with Cornelius Griffin. Amobi Okoye has eclipsed Alan Branch of late as the top defensive tackle, and with Gaines Adams off the board, Okoye is the top lineman available. Adam Carriker could be an option as well, but Okoye is the best pick for them here if they choose not to trade.
7. Minnesota Vikings- Leon Hall, CB, Michigan- Cedric Griffin has been in recent trouble with the law, and after Antoine Winfield, there isn't much else at the cornerback position. Leon Hall is the true shutdown corner in this draft, and he makes a lot of sense here. If by chance Brady Quinn falls to the 7th pick, the Vikings should definitely select him, but that seems unlikely so Hall is the best pick for them. Jamaal Anderson is an option, but at 7 he is a slight reach.
8. Atlanta Falcons- LaRon Landry, S, LSU- If Landry is available at the 8th pick, it should be a no-brainer for the Falcons. Chris Crocker is more of a third safety, Lawyer Milloy is aging, and they don't have any young guys in the system. Landry is the second-best defensive prospect in the draft after Gaines Adams, and the Falcons are extremely unlikely to pass him up if he falls.
9. Miami Dolphins- Reggie Nelson, S, Florida- Nelson is a legitimate top 10 pick, and with their top three options in Okoye, Hall, and Landry all taken off the board, it comes between Reggie Nelson and Joe Staley here. Staley is a definite reach at the 9th pick, but Reggie Nelson is the third best defensive back in the draft and would be a great addition for the Dolphins who could play either safety or cornerback. Levi Brown doesn't work for them here, because he probably is never going to be a good left tackle, and Vernon Carey, their right tackle, is their best player on the line.
10. Houston Texans- Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma- There's no question about it. Ahman Green has gone past his prime, and the rest of their running backs (Ron Dayne, Sam Gado, Wali Lundy, Chris Taylor) are all situational backs at best. Peterson is outstanding value at the 10th pick and although Alan Branch, Ted Ginn, Adam Carriker, and Levi Brown all make sense here as well, Peterson is the pick hands down.
11. San Francisco 49ers- Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska- Marques Douglas isn't bad, but Bryant Young is pretty much done, and they really need to get more pressure on the quarterback and better run stuffing. Carriker is great against the run and the pass and is the most complete defensive end in the draft. Patrick Willis would make sense here too because they are moving to a 3-4, but Brandon Moore is moving inside, and they really need a pass rusher, so Adam Carriker is the best pick here.
12. New England Patriots- Patrick Willis, ILB, Mississippi- Asante Samuel is likely to be traded on draft day as it seems unlikely he will come to an agreement with the Patriots, and if Patrick Willis is still available at the 12th pick, the Patriots may be apt to pounce on their opportunity. Patrick Willis is an outstanding player who fits the Patriots' 3-4 perfectly, and even with the signing of Adalius Thomas, their linebacker corps are thin, especially on the inside. The Bills are likely to make this deal because they lost Nate Clements in free agency and Asante Samuel would be a more than comparable replacement. If the Bills stay put at the 12th pick, Marshawn Lynch is the most likely pick.
13. St. Louis Rams- Alan Branch, DT, Michigan- The questions about Alan Branch's character come with insignificant substance and his value is tough to pass up for the Rams here. Jimmy Kennedy never panned out and La'Roi Glover turns 33 in July. The Rams need the large stopgap those players have failed to be, and Alan Branch could turn out to be that guy. Lawrence Timmons is an option here as well, but Branch makes sense.
14. Carolina Panthers- Greg Olsen, TE, Miami (FL)- The Panthers don't have a pass-catching threat at tight end and Greg Olsen is a very good pass catching threat. Typically tight ends are not taken this high, but Greg Olsen is a very good tight end whose stock has soared since the combine and with Patrick Willis off the board Olsen should garner a lot of interest. With Travelle Wharton coming off injury, Levi Brown could be a possibility here as well.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers- Jarvis Moss, DE/OLB, Florida- The Steelers are known to have interest in Moss and after Moss was spotted with a Steelers jersey bearing his name on the back- rumors of the Steelers selecting him on draft day have shot up. Moss projects better as an OLB in a 3-4, so it should come down to Moss and Lawrence Timmons here for finding a replacement for Joey Porter. Darrelle Revis should garner a lot of interest here.
16. Green Bay Packers- Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal- Vernand Morency is nothing more than a third-down back, and Marshawn Lynch is great value at 16. Marshawn Lynch's value should not be considered to be much lower than that of Adrian Peterson, so the Packers shouldn't have to think twice over this one.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars- Michael Griffin, S, Texas- With Deon Grant departed and Donovin Darius coming off injury once again, safety is a major need position for the Jaguars. That makes Michael Griffin a great choice at the 17th pick for them. It comes down to either Michael Griffin or Brandon Merriweather here at safety, or possibly Jon Beason.
18. Cincinatti Bengals- Jon Beason, OLB, Miami(FL)- With Brian Simmons gone, David Pollack's career in serious jeopardy, and Odell Thurman's status questionable, linebacker is the Bengals' biggest need. Jon Beason is rising up draft boards and he may be the 2nd best LB in the draft following Patrick Willis. With Rashad Jeanty and Ahmad Brooks, they would probably like to upgrade, so while Chris Houston would be a great pick to pair up with Jonathan Joseph, the best pick here is Beason.
19. Tennessee Titans- Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas- Anderson is great value at the 19th pick, and with Kyle Vanden Bosch as their leading pass rusher, an upgrade over Travis LaBoy is needed. Anderson may be a more complete player than Gaines Adams, and should be picked ahead of the 19th pick. If he does manage to fall to 19, then the Titans shouldn't have to think twice, even with Robert Meachem and Darrelle Revis still on the board.
20. New York Giants- Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan- Even with Levi Brown still on the board, there's a good possibility the Giants take Staley here over Levi. The Giants need help at both tackle positions, and as Staley's stock continually rising, they may choose Staley even over potential top 10 pick Levi Brown. Darrelle Revis is an option here as well.
21. Denver Broncos- Levi Brown, OT, Penn State- Brown is a potential top 10 pick and the Broncos should be smart enough to pass him up at the 21st pick. There is a good possibility the Broncos will attempt to beat the Patriots to the punch at Patrick Willis, but if they can't move up for Willis, then Levi Brown would be good consolation at the 21st pick. Brandon Merriweather is a possibility here as well.
22. Dallas Cowboys- Ted Ginn, WR, Ohio State- Terrell Owens is always a question mark, and there isn't much behind Terry Glenn and Patrick Crayton, so Ted Ginn would be a great pick here at a great value. Ginn could also be the kick returner for the Cowboys, something Ginn is very skilled at. They could also opt for a different receiver in Robert Meachem, or go with a cornerback in Aaron Ross.
23. Kansas City Chiefs- Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn- As tempting as Robert Meachem is here, the retirement of Will Shields leaves the Chiefs with a huge hole, so either Ben Grubbs or Justin Blalock should be the pick here. The Chiefs are reportedly quite interested in Ben Grubbs, so Grubbs gets the nod over Blalock here.
24. New England Patriots- Darrelle Revis, CB, Pittsburgh- With Chris Houston and Darrelle Revis still on the board, it comes to a decision between cornerbacks here to replacement the recently departed Asante Samuel. Houston showcased his outstanding athletic ability at the combine, but Revis should get the nod here for he is the more complete cornerback and he is more physical.
25. New York Jets- Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas- The Jets are in need of a true #1 at corner, and Chris Houston could be that guy. Both Chris Houston and Aaron Ross are options here, but Houston should be off the board before Ross is.
26. Philadelphia Eagles- Brandon Merriweather, S, Miami(FL)- With the loss of Michael Lewis, who was subpar last season anyways, a replacement safety is needed. Sean Considine is just average and Brian Dawkins is aging, so with Brandon Merriweather still available, he should be the pick for the Eagles. Lawrence Timmons is an option here as well, but he shouldn't be taken over Merriweather.
27. New Orleans Saints- Aaron Ross, CB, Texas- The Saints could really use a cornerback to start opposite Mike McKenzie, and while they would have loved for Revis or Houston to fall to them, they will settle for Aaron Ross here. Paul Posluszny is also an option.
28. Buffalo Bills- Lawrence Timmons, OLB, Florida State- The Bills filled one major need by replacing Nate Clements with Asante Samuel, and they fill another here by drafting Lawrence Timmons, as they plan to move Angelo Crowell inside to take over for London Fletcher-Baker. Paul Posluszny is also an option here.
29. Baltimore Ravens- Justin Blalock, T/G, Texas- With the loss of Tony Pashos, still possible pending loss of Jonathan Ogden, and in need of upgrades at guard too, the offensive line is a major area of concern for the Ravens. That makes Justin Blalock the best pick here. Paul Posluszny is an option here as well with the loss of Adalius Thomas, and Robert Meachem is a possibility as well.
30. San Diego Chargers- Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee- Vincent Jackson is a good young receiver, but the Chargers don't have much else at receiver. Robert Meachem is great value at the 30th pick, and it comes down between him and Dwayne Bowe here.
31. Chicago Bears- Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU- Bowe is great value at the end of the first round, and the Bears could use to bring in a top talent at receiver, something that even with Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian they have yet to find. Dwayne Jarrett and Tony Ugoh are options here as well.
32. Indianapolis Colts- Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee- With Jon Beason and Lawrence Timmons off the board, the Colts have to wait on a linebacker and look to defensive tackle in either Justin Harrell or Demarcus Tyler. Anthony McFarland in the playoff run, but the Colts don't have anyone to pair up with him with the loss of Montae Reagor. Justin Harrell likely gets the nod here over Tyler.
Round 2
33. Oakland Raiders- Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC- It sounds as if Randy Moss will be out of Oakland on draft day, so the Raiders will need to find a new target to help out their new quarterback, JaMarcus Russell. That makes Jarrett the smart pick here.
34. Detroit Lions- Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State- After passing on Brady Quinn in round 1, they get their quarterback of the future in round two from Drew Stanton. They are known to like Drew Stanton and seeing they are staying in-state, expect Stanton over Trent Edwards here.
35. Detroit Lions- Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia- After losing James Hall, defensive end is a major need for the Lions and Charles Johnson is a good pick early in the second round. They could also look to draft a corner in Eric Wright here.
36. Cleveland Browns- DeMarcus Tyler, DT, NC State- The Browns signed Shaun Smith, but they could really use more of a true nose tackle as a future replacement for Ted Washington. Eric Wright is an option here as well.
37. Chicago Bears- Tony Ugoh, T, Arkansas- With Fred Miller near the end of his career, drafting a tackle on Day 1 would be a good idea. Tony Ugoh makes sense here. They could also opt for a linebacker here in Paul Posluszny with Lance Briggs likely to be traded.
38. Arizona Cardinals- Ryan Kalil, C, USC- The Cardinals need more than just one upgrade on their offensive line, so although they drafted Joe Thomas in round 1, they go with best pick available in round 2 with another offensive lineman in Ryan Kalil. Matt Leinart is familiar to taking snaps from Kalil from their days at USC, so this is a great pick for the Cardinals.
39. Atlanta Falcons- Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State- The Falcons would really benefit from bringing in a receiver to help out Mike Vick, and if they can't get Calvin Johnson in the first round, Gonzalez makes sense in the second.
40. Miami Dolphins- Tim Crowder, DE, Texas- Jason Taylor is aging so the Dolphins would really like to get a young defensive end into the system. Tim Crowder would probably be the best pick for them here, although Anthony Spencer and Arron Sears are options too.
41. Minnesota Vikings- Victor Abiamiri, DE, Notre Dame- Abiamiri was a top pass rusher at Notre Dame and he should be able to translate that success over to the NFL. After passing on Jamaal Anderson in round 1, Abiamiri makes sense in the second.
42. San Francisco 49ers- David Harris, ILB, Michigan- After passing on Patrick Willis, David Harris should be the pick for the Niners here. Harris is a possible 1st-round pick, and at 42, the 49ers would be making a smart selection.
43. Buffalo Bills- Arron Sears, T/G, Tennessee- The Bills could certainly use an upgrade over Terrance Pennington at right tackle, so after getting themselves a linebacker and cornerback already, the Bills should grab Arron Sears here.
44. Atlanta Falcons- Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue- John Abraham is great, but the loss of Patrick Kerney leaves them with Chauncey Davis is their best option on the other side. Anthony Spencer is good value in the middle of the second round, and he would make a great replacement.
45. Carolina Panthers- H.B Blades, ILB, Pittsburgh- They missed out on Patrick Willis in the first round, leaving them still with a need to bring in a middle linebacker with Dan Morgan's future well in question. H.B Blades is the best inside linebacker remaining in the draft, so the Panthers shouldn't pass on Blades here.
46. Pittsburgh Steelers- Eric Wright, CB, UNLV- The Steelers really need some more youth at cornerback, and with Eric Wright and Bryant McFadden the Steelers would have two young cornerbacks with great potential to hopefully develop into top-of-the-line cornerbacks.
47. Green Bay Packers- Jason Hill, WR, Washington State- Greg Jennings had an outstanding rookie year, and Donald Driver has always been reliable, but they have hardly anyone at the position behind them. Jason Hill is the best receiver on the board and would be a great addition for the Packers. Eric Weddle could also be an option here as an upgrade at safety, but Hill is the best pick.
48. Jacksonville Jaguars- Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State- Mike Peterson is aging and coming off injury, and along with Peterson and Daryl Smith there isn't a whole lot else there, so with Posluszny, a possible first-rounder, still available, he is the best selection here.
49. Cincinatti Bengals- Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State- After passing on Chris Houston and Darrelle Revis in the first round, the Bengals need to find a cornerback who can pair up with Jonathan Joseph. Marcus McCauley has first-round potential, but had a dissapointing senior season and is somewhat raw.
50. Tennessee Titans- Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina- The Titans have David Givens, Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby, and Justin Gage, but they lack a true #1 receiver. Sidney Rice is more of a #2 type himself, but he would help attribute to the cause. Josh Wilson and Tony Hunt are options as well.
51. New York Giants- Justin Durant, OLB, Hampton- With Carlos Emmons and LaVar Arrington both sent packing, the Giants opened up a big need at outside linebacker. Justin Durant is an outstanding athlete and was a Division 1-AA standout at Hampton, and is the best pick for the Giants here.
52. St. Louis Rams- Josh Wilson, CB, Maryland- The Rams have Tye Hill, but they could use another young corner to pair up with Hill. Josh Wilson is a good cornerback talent that would provide the Rams with a strong pair of young, athletic cornerbacks to lead their secondary. Quinn Pitcock is an option here as well.
53. Dallas Cowboys- Tanard Jackson, CB, Syracuse- After passing on the talented trio of cornerbacks in Darrelle Revis, Chris Houston, and Aaron Ross all available to them in round 1, they grab a cornerback here in round 2 in Tanard Jackson who can mix in with Terence Newman and Anthony Henry.
54. Kansas City Chiefs- Aundrae Allison, WR, East Carolina- After passing on Robert Meachem in the 1st, they go with another burner-type receiver in the second with Aundrae Allison. Quinn Pitcock or Turk McBride could be an option here as well.
55. Seattle Seahawks- Josh Beekman, G, Boston College- The loss of Steve Hutchinson hurt this team last year, so with their first pick they bring in a true replacement for Hutchinson in Josh Beekman. Scott Chandler is also an option here.
56. Denver Broncos- Eric Weddle, S, Utah- With John Lynch aging, and no other true safeties who are legitimate starters, the Broncos can't go through Day 1 without addressing the position. That's why Eric Weddle is the best pick for the Broncos late in the second. Ikaika Alama-Francis could be an option here as well.
57. Philadelphia Eagles- Stewart Bradley, OLB, Nebraska- The Eagles still need upgrades at the linebacker position so Stewart Bradley is the best selection here. Craig Davis could be an option here as well.
58. New Orleans Saints- Ben Patrick, TE, Duke- The Saints signed Eric Johnson, but they could still use a real pass-catching threat, making Ben Patrick the best pick here. Quincy Black is an option here as well.
59. New York Jets- Turk McBride, DT, Tennessee- Dewayne Robertson hasn't quite turned out to be the star he was supposed to be, so the Jets would like to bring in some competition at nose tackle. Turk McBride would be strong competition. They could also opt for a tight end with Zach Miller or a 3-4 outside linebacker in LaMarr Woodley.
60. Miami Dolphins- James Marten, T, Boston College- The offensive line is area of concern and no quarterback will get anywhere with their line which the offensive runs under right now, so the Dolphins should go with a lineman here. James Marten is the best available.
61. Baltimore Ravens- LaMarr Woodley, DE/OLB, Michigan- With the loss of Adalius Thomas, they need to bring in a new playmaker to take his place. LaMarr Woodley is a great option here as a 3-4 outside linebacker. They should look to linebacker here- Brian Robison and Rufus Alexander could be options as well.
62. San Diego Chargers- Aaron Rouse, S, Virginia Tech- The Chargers grabbed their big time receiver in round 1, so they need to find a safety here in the second. It comes down to Aaron Rouse and Sabby Piscitelli, and Rouse gets the nod.
63. New York Jets- Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State- At one point, Miller may have gone at this point of the first round, but after a disappointing combine, he's a second rounder at best. Miller makes sense for the Jets here however.
64. Tampa Bay Buccanneers- Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii- With only two picks now on draft day to work with, they have to grab a defensive lineman here in the second, with their only other pick being Calvin Johnson. Either Ikaika Alama-Francis or Ray McDonald would make sense.
Round 3
65. Oakland Raiders- Marshal Yanda, T/G, Iowa- The Raiders need to address the offensive line here after failing to do so in the first two rounds. Samson Satele and Doug Free are options as well.
66. Detroit Lions- Buster Davis, MLB, Florida State- Davis is great value early in the third round and fills a need at middle linebacker. They could also look to a cornerback in David Irons here.
67. Cleveland Browns- Tony Hunt, RB, Penn State- They signed Jamal Lewis, but drafting a running back in the third round would be a smart move for the Browns. Tony Hunt and Antonio Pittman are the choices here, and Hunt gets the nod. Ray McDonald and Brandon Siler are options as well.
68. Detroit Lions- David Irons, CB, Auburn- The Lions need a cornerback to fill the void left by Dre Bly and David Irons is a great selection in the third round.
69. Arizona Cardinals- Brian Robison, DE, Texas- Robison made a name for himself at the Scouting Combine, and is just the type of pass rusher the Cardinals need. Quentin Moses is also an option here.
70. Denver Broncos- Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia- There was a time when Quentin Moses was considered a top 10 prospect in this draft. But a horrible senior season and combine showing hurt his stock immensely, and with the Broncos on the clock with the 70th pick, he finds himself still waiting. Moses is a risk, but he showed his talent in his junior year and could turn out to be a big steal if he falls this far.
71. Miami Dolphins- Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State- Pitcock is great value in the third round, and defensive tackle is a position the Dolphins need to look at brining in youth for on day one.
72. Minnesota Vikings- Brandon Siler, MLB, Florida- The loss of Napoleon Harris leaves the Vikings with a hole at middle linebacker, making Siler their best choice here. They could also look for a wide receiver in Steve Smith here.
73. Houston Texans- Steve Smith, WR, USC- Andre Johnson is fantastic, but there aren't any other great targets for Matt Schaub. Smith may be a steal in the third round, and he makes sense here. Jonathan Wade is also an option.
74. New England Patriots- Zak DeOssie, ILB, Brown- Even after taking Patrick Willis in round 1, they use their other pick from the Bills on another linebacker and take Zak DeOssie here, son of former Patriot Steve DeOssie.
75. Atlanta Falcons- Mason Crosby, K, Colorado- Morten Andersen is gone and Michael Koenen is too inaccurate to kick field goals so Mason Crosby is a good pick for the Falcons here. Usually kickers aren't taken on the first day, but Crosby is one of the best kickers to come around in a long time and is worth it here for the Falcons. Dan Bazuin and Anthony Waters are also options here.
76. San Francisco 49ers- Craig Davis, WR, LSU- Steve Smith would have been ideal here, but the Niners settle for Craig Davis, another potential steal in the third round. Ray McDonald is also a possibility.
77. Pittsburgh Steelers- Samson Satele, C, Hawaii- The Steelers need a replacement for Jeff Hartings, so the pick here should be either Samson Satele or Leroy Harris.
78. Green Bay Packers- Sabby Piscitelli, S, Oregon State- Marquand Manuel has been a disappointment, so they grab a safety here in Piscitelli. They could also go interior line here with Leroy Harris.
79. Jacksonville Jaguars- Trent Edwards, QB, Stanford- The Jags need to find a long-term starter. This pick should come down to Edwards and John Beck, but Edwards is the better pro prospect.
Cincinatti Bengals- pick used on Ahmad Brooks in supplemental draft
80. Tennessee Titans- Antonio Pittman, RB, Ohio State- The Titans lost Travis Henry, and whether Chris Brown or LenDale White has much of a future is truly in question, so bringing in another running back makes sense. Antonio Pittman was productive at Ohio State splitting time with Chris Wells and is a steal in the middle of the third round. Jonathan Wade is an option here as well.
81. New York Giants- Brian Leonard, RB/FB, Rutgers- The Giants have Brandon Jacobs, but with the loss of Tiki Barber it is a good idea to bring in another back to share the load. Like Jacobs, Leonard plays both running back and fullback, so they would be perfect for a split-backs formation and for splitting carries.
82. St.Louis Rams- Travarous Bain, CB, Hampton- The loss of Travis Fisher leaves the team with virtually no depth behind Tye Hill and Fakhir Brown. Travarous Bain is one of the best Division 1-AA prospects in the draft and is a good selection for the Rams here. Andy Alleman would be a good option here as well to make up for the loss of Adam Timmerman.
83. Carolina Panthers- John Wendling, S, Wyoming- The Panthers need an upgrade over Shaun Williams, and John Wendling would be a great guy to bring in as a possible suitor.
84. Kansas City Chiefs- Ray McDonald, DT, Florida- McDonald is a steal in the third round, and defensive tackle is a desperate need. With Larry Johnson on the outs, Brandon Jackson is a possibility as well.
85. Seattle Seahawks- Scott Chandler, TE, Iowa- With Jerramy Stevens out in Seattle, they need a long-term replacement. Scott Chandler made himself a legitimate second-rounder with his Senior Bowl performance and available late in the third the Seahawks need to take Chandler.
86. Denver Broncos- Kenny Irons, RB, Auburn- The Broncos have Travis Henry and Mike Bell, but the Broncos are known for developing running backs and bringing in another running back does not hurt them. Leroy Harris and Jonathan Wade are options here as well.
87. Dallas Cowboys- Brandon Mebane, NT, Cal- The Cowboys need an upgrade over Jason Ferguson in the middle and Mebane is a gap-stopper. They could also go running back here with Brandon Jackson.
88. New Orleans Saints- Quincy Black, OLB, New Mexico- The Saints could use to bring in some more youth for the linebackers, and Quincy Black is a great value in the third round. This pick should come down to Black, Rufus Alexander, and Paul Williams.
89. New York Jets- Jay Moore, DE, Nebraska- The Jets need an upgrade over Eric Barton as a 3-4 outside linebacker, and Jay Moore could be that guy. Dan Bazuin is also an option.
90. Philadelphia Eagles- Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State- Donovan McNabb has struggled with injuries and Troy Smith could learn from him as well. If they don't want to threaten McNabb's presence at QB, Paul Williams is an option as well.
91. New England Patriots- Brandon Jackson, RB, Nebraska- Although they drafted Laurence Maroney just last year, the most effective backfield is to have a two running back combo, and they don't exactly get a lot from Sammy Morris, Heath Evans, or Kevin Faulk. Brandon Jackson is a steal late in the third round and that's why they draft him here. Tim Shaw is also an option.
92. Buffalo Bills- Michael Bush, RB, Louisville- Bush could turn out to be a major steal late in the third round, but his health concerns will likely cause him to drop to this point. He is a great pick here for the Bills however, with the loss of Willis McGahee, they need a running back who can carry the load, so they take a risk here. Michael Allan is also an option.
93. San Diego Chargers- Anthony Waters, ILB, Clemson- The Chargers lost Donnie Edwards so they can bring in a linebacker to compete for the spot with Matt Wilhelm in Anthony Waters. They could also grab a cornerback who could also contribute as a returner here with Jonathan Wade.
94. Chicago Bears- Lorenzo Booker, RB, Florida- After trading Thomas Jones, they should look to bring in a back to pair with Cedric Benson. Lorenzo Booker is a good pick at the end of the third round, and is the best running back. Michael Allan is also an option.
95. Indianapolis Colts- Rufus Alexander, OLB, Oklahoma- After missing out on Jon Beason and Lawrence Timmons in round one, they need a linebacker here, making Rufus Alexander the selection.
96. San Diego Chargers- Jonathan Wade, CB, Tennessee- Jonathan Wade may be a kick returner more than anything at the NFL level, but the Chargers need a better returner. Jacoby Jones is also an option.
97. San Francisco 49ers- Antonio Johnson, DT, Mississippi State- In shifting to a 3-4, the 49ers need a true nose tackle, so they take a shot with Antonio Johnson here. They could also go offensive line with Manuel Ramirez.
98. Indianapolis Colts- Paul Williams, WR, Fresno State- Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are the best pair of receivers in the business, but there isn't a lot behind them. A good young slot receiver would help, and Paul Williams could be that guy.
99. Oakland Raiders- Marcus Thomas, DT, Florida- Thomas has first-round talent, but his load of character issues could make him drop to day two. With the last pick of day one however, the Raiders take a chance on Thomas.
