Detroit Lions Draft Review

The Raiders had a clear-cut choice with the #1 pick, but in Detroit, that was far from the case. There were many options with the #2 pick, and they had many needs to fill with all their picks in the draft. Did they make the right decisions? My analysis:

Rookie Stud: Wide receiver Calvin Johnson from Georgia Tech, the consensus best prospect in the 2007 draft, comes into a system which has drafted three first-round wide receivers in the past four years and only one of which has become the star he was supposed to be (Roy Williams) while two were major dissapointments in Detroit (Charles Rogers, Mike Williams). However, Calvin is the best prospect of them yet, and could be one of the league's top receivers as a rookie, and a definite front-runner for Rookie of the Year. While the Lions were not in need of a wide receiver with Roy Williams and Mike Furrey already there, it sure does give them one of the league's top receiver tandems. Johnson would have been a great addition for any team, and he will be for the Lions.

Wheeling and Lots of Dealing: The Lions made four trades on Day 1. They started it off when they moved down nine spots from #34 to #43 with Buffalo and received a 3rd rounder (#74) in the process. Quarterback Drew Stanton from Michigan State was the player the Lions coveted in the second round, and they still acquired him in the second round, so their first trade was a definite plus. But they weren't done there. Next they traded Josh McCown and Mike Williams for a fourth-round pick. Now while they only got one second-day pick for two players, the selections of Johnson and Stanton made both players highly expendable, so the deal made sense. Then, late in the second round, they moved up for two more picks. They traded their third and fifth rounders to the Saints for the 58th pick and with that they picked Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii. Seeing it only cost them a fifth rounder to move up, this was another smart move as Alama-Francis could have been gone by their 3rd-round pick, and pass rusher was a need. The final trade made less sense, as the Lions traded the Bills' 3rd-rounder and their 4th rounder to the Ravens for the 62nd pick, where they selected Gerald Alexander, S, Boise State. Alexander is a fine prospect, but he was a reach in the second round, and they likely could have had him at 74. Even with the trade, they could have drafted a better safety in Sabby Piscitelli.

The Lions used the 4th round pick they acquired from the Raiders in return for Josh McCown and Mike Williams on A.J Davis, CB, NC State. This was another case where they made a solid pick, but a better pick would have cornerback Tanard Jackson, who was selected just the next pick.

The Lions made one more deal in trading their 5th-round pick and the Rams' 5th-round pick back to the Rams for the Rams' 4th-round pick, which they used to select Manuel Ramirez, G, Texas Tech. Ramirez was a steal in the fourth round, so this deal made sense.

With their remaining 5th-round pick (from Denver) they selected Alabama A&M outside linebacker Johnny Baldwin. Outside linebacker was not really a need, but middle linebacker was, so why take Baldwin over H.B Blades here?

Mr. Irrelevant: Ramzee Robinson, cornerback from Alabama earned himself the dubious honor of being the Mr. Irrelevant of the 2007 NFL draft by being the last player selected. Robinson was a good pick here with the last pick who could be a nickel/dime back down the road.

Analysis Summary:

The Good-

Taking the best player available in Calvin Johnson

Acquiring a third rounder and still drafting Drew Stanton

Ramzee Robinson with the "irrelevant pick"

The Bad-

Trading up for Gerald Alexander

Drafting Johnny Baldwin over H.B Blades

Final Grade: B : The Lions made smart deals aside from the Gerald Alexander trade, and they did really well in trading down from the 34th pick, acquiring a 3rd rounder (which they used to move up for Alexander), and still being able to draft Drew Stanton, their quarterback of the future. Calvin Johnson was a very good pick who will give the Lions one of the league's best receiver tandems, but had they drafted H.B Blades in the 5th round, their draft would look even better.

Next Up: Cleveland Browns
